Self-watering planter - finishing the interior

The idea behind a self-watering planter is that you create a reservoir inside of the planter to keep your plants hydrated. Before installing the reservoir, I need to construct a floor to support the cavity.

For this I used a few 2x4's supported by cross members secured to the exterior walls.

Once the floor was in place, a bath tub was created by lining the container with heavy gauge plastic sheeting.

  1. That should work fine if you can keep the mosquitoes down without resorting to poison which will kill the birds that happen to drink the water an it may get to the plants too. So I am not sure if it was me if I would use something like this unless you don't have a lot of insects.

  2. Abe,
I don't think bugs will be a problem. The water chambers are covered by dirt and compost. But we'll see.
